Gable Roof

This is a very common roof style and is commonly recognized by its triangular shape.  It is very efficient in moving water and snow off your roof, while offering extra attic space for storage. As the design is fairly simple and not as complex as other roof styles for homes, it is also more cost efficient.

Although it sheds off water fast, very steep gable roofs can be problematic in high winds, as their large surface could clash with strong winds.

Hip Roof

As the name suggests, hip roofs have slopes on all four sides. They are usually equal in length and come together to the top of the roof to create a ridge shape. Hip roofs are generally more stable and durable than gable roofs and still allow water and snow to slide off the side of the roof.

However, in a direct comparison with gable roofs, hip roofs are slightly more expensive to build, as they are more complex and need more material.

Flat Roof

With flat roofs, there are typically no sides. Although they appear just flat, there is usually a slight pitch to allow water to run off the sides of the roof and into the drainage system. One of the benefits of a flat roof is the extra living space that can be created on the top of the house, such as a little roof garden or even as a space that can host solar panels.
